Water Sampling Like a Pro

We’ll use equipment the pros use to see how healthy the water is in the Little Miami River. Participants will learn about Greenacres Saturday Stream Snapshot Citizen Monitoring Program. Participants are welcome to bring a water sample from their own creek or we will provide samples of the Little Miami River. Participants will get a chance to help process their samples in our high-end lab using meters and other procedures the professionals use.

Fly Rod Casting and Fly Tying

Fly fishing experts will provide hands-on fly rod casting and fly tying instructions for all who would like to get a taste of the wonderful sport of fly fishing. Come see if you can hit a target with a fly tied to the end of a fly line. Tie a woolly worm fly to take on your next fishing outing or to decorate your favorite hat. Who knows, you may actually get hooked on this intriguing sport. All the casting equipment and fly tying tools and materials will be provided.

River Critters: Discover What Lives Below the Surface

Kayak the Little Miami River

Kayak the Little Miami River. Trips start at the Izaak Walton League Lodge and end at Lake Isabella. The trip takes approximately a 1/2 hour. The Division of Watercraft will provide transportation back to the Izaak Walton League Lodge from Lake Isabella. Although the course will continue rain or shine, high water conditions could cause a cancellation of the program. Sign up sheets will be posted at the Izaak Walton League Lodge on the day of the event, so this will be first come, first serve. Only eight people will get to go on each trip, so arrive early to insure yourself a spot.

Catch a Fish in the Little Miami River

Come learn how to catch a fish in the Little Miami River with Izaak Walton League experienced guides. A short lesson on how to use a traditional type fishing rod and reel, choose and attach the lure to the line, and how to cast the lure will be held on shore. Participants will then hike down a flight of stairs to the Little Miami where guides will show you the best places in the river to catch a fish. Everyone will get a chance to fish. Participants can get wet and muddy so plan accordingly. Restrooms are available to change afterward.

Ever wanted to try your hand at sports shooting? This basic introduction session is for beginners with minimal gun handling experience who may be interested in taking a rifle course. Instructors will provide participants with a hands-on introduction to safe gun handling and marksmanship using air rifle, Each participant will get a chance to practice shooting a rifle at a target.

Learn To Canoe

This is a basic introduction to canoeing. Participants will learn all you will need for a safe canoeing trip including how to select the proper equipment, how to maneuver the canoe with different strokes, and what other supplies and equipment you need to take with you. First there will be an onshore class where participants will learn some basics before entering the water. Then participants will launch boats into a pool area of the Little Miami River where they will be able to practice what they have learned before return the boats to the shore where they launched. Participants can get wet and muddy so plan accordingly. Restrooms are available to change afterward.
